Storyboard Analysis Video

Our storyboard clearly demonstrates that the music video was rather short and brief. We had many spare shots that clearly affected our video making it seem dull and rather boring. We have many ideas on shots that reflect the actors journey but is not shown in the storyboard.

Targets

1. Focus on more locations that will emphasise our narrative
2. Develop our narrative more closely so it tells the story of our artist overcoming his struggles to become a musician.
3. More close-ups of the singer
4. Better use of locations, more locations to demonstrate the journey
5. Make sure the timeline is more detailed

Animatics Of Our New Song

In our animatics we expected to use more shots especially close-ups, so that we could capture the emotions of our main actor. We went through 3 of them and thought that this was closest towards the video due to the planned shots but they weren't all precise in terms of timings. This gives us the motivation to make our video even better by using more camera techniques such as a birds eye view of our actor, walking in the streets.

Story Board Of Our Video

This is our storyboard of our music video going from right to left and again. It shows us the basics of what we expect to film and edit when we start using the camera. It also gives us an idea of how much work is needed to put into this project and the time that we need to make it completely fluent and in synch. The times represent what we wrote on the timeline.

Development Of Our Idea

After receiving feedback from our idea, we decided to come to an agreement that What Went Down (FOALS) is our official song for the video. Firstly, the lyrics in the song cohere with the narrative and we like the beat at the beginning of the song. We thought that we could use the three drum beats to our benefit in the final product and make them stand out massively.

We also changed the narrative very slightly as we originally planned to include a scene of domestic violence as well as more actors to be the lead singer. However, we came to the conclusion that it would be hard to act this out and look as real as possible. Especially if we are using inexperienced actors. Furthermore we decided that it would be too hard to have 3 or 4 actors playing the same boy throughout his childhood. It would simply be too hard and would take too long to find the right looking male. We decided to create a narrative the shows a boy who goes through a number of hardships during his youth, but finally pulls through and achieves his life ambition to be a musician. It is showing 'what went down' whilst he was growing up.

Originally we were going to use sugar glass bottles for a scene where two bullies hurt the boy. But we decided that this could also be dangerous due to sharp shards and the bottles are at a hefty price. We want to use realistic but yet effective costumes hence why we decided to look up to the Ramones by dressing cool but modern in that era. It is evident online as well because people have done the same thing with sugar glass.

From receiving heavy feedback about our audience we decided we will target an audience of teenagers to young adults as we believe that our narrative can be something that may relate to those less fortunate than others and maybe motivate them. We also have the genre of being Indie/Rock/Alternative, so we are targeting lovers of this music and especially individuals who enjoy the organic music made today.

Our Music Video Feedback

We were given feedback from our idea by our peers that we need to evaluate as well as learn from. Firstly we need to work on a specific audience as we haven't fully specified who they are and what we expect from them. This will mean we can enter markets to gain maximum exposure towards the band but as well as the genre we will present. We should also find concepts to make our band stand out, so maybe incorporating it by editing our video very precisely as well as making it seem realistic. Audience wise, we need to engage with an audience so that they can relate to our intricate parts of the video like our costumes or locations. We also need to make sure our narrative flows and follows a sequence of events so that is understandable for those who may not get what we are trying to say.

Overall this feedback gives us the implication that a lot of work is needed to be able to pull of this music video and that we need to make it perfect in order to champion the narrative. We have also decided to combat the feedback by focusing more on our performance element to show the organic side of our artist to maximize our bands exposure as an Indie Rock Band. Our narrative also needs to tell the story of the bands star image from a working class background towards stardom.

Our 3rd Idea (Changing Our Song)

Our Final Idea

Our first song was Scumbag City Blues by The Strypes. We decided that we should change the song but not the idea. Our first choice of song was too constant and didn't start the way we wanted it to. We would like something to start off quite calm and build up to a heavy beat that's why we found two songs, 'The Healing - Gary Clark Jr' and 'What Went Down - FOALS'. The Healing was a great song with a relatable narrative that would cohere and enhance the video's meaning. However the song was too dull and didn't build up any tension. We then decided to use 'What Went Down' as it builds up power through the music and lyrics which compliments our idea of a boy overcoming obstacles in his hard life. We wanted to keep our main focus on an organic artist but one who is a part of a band. Gary Clark Jr is a solo artist but we would like to feature a band so it shows how we have the music isn't synthetically manufactured by a company. Plus we are promoting a band that has similar qualities to FOALS so it means we have something to work with.
