Our First Music Video Attempt

We made our first attempt of making a music video in our school. We used a rock song called Can't Stop by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers which has an up-beat sound as an organic artist style video. Our knowledge and understanding of music videos was a minority as we hadn't filmed one yet and none of us had any practice or time to learn the song.

In the video we tried to come up with many types of shots so that we could experiment with the camera to see if we could create small scenes that would be eye catching. However we did not succeed that much in our establishing shots as we tried to use handheld camera techniques by running with the device, but it was too shaky. Furthermore we had students running in front of the camera making it look unprofessional and unplanned. The lip syncing was not in time with the music and we struggled to learn all the lyrics as it was too much of a long song. However we did incorporate some good shots into the video such as the close up of the instrument to show it is organic and that I was playing the guitar in time to the music (not really). Editing wise, we used minor cuts as we originally wanted one whole take but it wouldn't of worked with 2 people. Also the transitions did not work well. But we used some god tracking and panning shots to follow the artist as if the camera was unnoticed. We didn't have much of a plan with shots so we just ended up throwing in what came to our minds. At one point I was reading the lyrics from a mobile as time was at the essence.

From this video I have learnt that planning is a key element of a music video and that each little part of a song has to be planned in terms of cuts, lyrics and editing etc. We hope to incorporate this in our upcoming ideas.
